Mary Francis Mary Francis, Centrica

Mary is held in extremely high regard by all those who work with her   across Centrica as an incisive and dedicated SID who takes a thorough approach to research and preparation. During a period of significant change at the company she has provided strong support and wise counsel in a constructive and helpful manner.

In matters of governance and remuneration she has used her experience to balance shareholder demands and management incentives, building trust on all sides to develop challenging and rewarding pay structures. As Chair of the company’s CR Committee she has approached the role with considerable rigour and the company has won a number of awards in this area as a result. The judges praised her as being ‘constantly constructive, able and hard working.’

In the last year Bexley Trust has undergone significant change as  nearly 500 staff moved to two other NHS organisations. Barbara   maintained the Trust’s focus on delivering the best possible   standards  of care to the local community.


Her innovative approach included greater public involvement in the setting of objectives for the Trust, and taking the unprecedented step of devolving clinical decision-making to a specialist Clinical Cabinet within the organisation. Barbara's boundless enthusiasm saw her ‘test-drive’ a range of the Trust’s services, drive a range of efficiency programmes and put greater decision-making power into the hands of those local health professionals that know the patients best. The judges were most impressed with her dedication, energy and the way in which she pushed through material beneficial change to the Trust’s work, whilst overcoming considerable personal health challenges in beating cancer.

John’s approach to his role as a Non-Executive Chairman has demonstrated his commitment to the company’s success whilst maintaining the necessary distance from operational issues to ensure he effectively fulfils his role.

As an NED and Chairman he has provided invaluable support to the company’s management whilst challenging thinking in a collegiate and constructive manner. He takes his shareholder responsibilities very seriously, building strong relationships with institutional shareholders and helping management deliver a transformational growth story over a five year period, increasing market capitalisation from £2 million to £40 million. The judges were impressed with the level of time he commits to the business, his thorough understanding of the Chairman’s role and his contribution to the company’s exceptional investment performance.

Phil White, Lookers

The judges were particularly impressed by how well Phil is respected in and outside the company and with his insights into the business. Lookers is a well run company and part of its success is due to the Chairman’s thorough grasp of the business.
Phil oversees regular strategy reviews, which form part of the Board's reporting process and have enabled management reporting process and have enabled management to transform the motor and parts/after-sales elements of the business. When the company undertook a banking review and equity raising in 2009, Phil was instrumental in negotiations, enabling the company to trade on more stable financial terms. His boardroom style tests managerial decision making and focuses on long term shareholder value, which has included a revised incentive structure to reduce costs and fully motivate the company’s management team.

Colin was attracted to Poundland by the entrepreneurial spark of a family company and was initially involved in mentoring the management team. When it became necessary to strengthen the management team, he temporarily took on executive responsibilities whilst recruiting a new team.

Colin was instrumental in devising Poundland’s new strategy and attracting investors to support the company.
